What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an appliance that is designed to fill the gap caused by one or more missing teeth. The implant is a metal post that is set into a pre-drilled hole in the jaw bone. Once the post has been put in place and the bone has been allowed to attach to it, a porcelain, ceramic or gold crown is created and bonded into place over the post. The top of the tooth or crown is made to look like the tooth it was designed to replace.

By filling the gap that was created by the missing teeth, the implant prevents the teeth located on either side from shifting. Using a dental implant will ensure the other teeth maintain their proper place and alignment. This also can reduce the risk of joint damage and relieve TMJ pain.

Are Dental Implants Permanent?

Dental implants are designed to be permanent. The post is implanted into the jaw bone so that the bone can remodel around it, holding it firmly in place. Once the bone has healed, the post cannot be removed without breaking the jaw. If the crown of the tooth is made of ceramic or porcelain, there is a chance that it may become cracked or chipped over time. Although the post will not need to be replaced, the crown can be replaced as necessary. In most cases, a crown made out of dental grade porcelain will last several years without experiencing any damage. If a person has received several dental implants over the years, they may be able to have a full set of dentures made using the snap on/implant technology instead of conventional dentures.
